Everyone knows that there is no way to 100% crime-proof your home. However, there are steps you can take to minimize the chances of becoming a crime victim.
Here are some ideas to consider:
- Make sure the lighting around your home is adequate. Put motion detector lights on the corners of your house as well as lights at your front and back doors.
- Trim the bushes and trees around your home to a height that does not obstruct the view of windows or doors from the outside or your view out from the inside.
- When discarding the box(packaging) after the purchase of a major item (TV, stereo, microwave) do not leave the box visible to the public, either by your house or at the curb for trash pick-up.
- If you have slatted blinds, turn the slats upward not downward in order to prevent someone from looking into your home.
- Do not leave windows open when you are not home. Yes - even second story windows.
- Do not leave ladders outside or visible to the public.
- Leave a television or radio on when not home.
However, the most important anti-crime weapon is getting to know your neighbors and neighborhood. Create a neighborhood watch. If you see something that looks out of order or suspicious, contact the Police. It is better to be overly cautious and prevent you or a neighbor from becoming a victim than to do nothing and risk losing the feeling of safety in your neighborhood.
Remember: Criminals look for that easy target. By making sure your residence is not an attractive target, you will greatly decrease your chances of coming home to find your hard-earned items no longer yours to enjoy. Your home is your castle. Make every effort to Crime Proof Your Home.
