The Town of Cornelius requires that all organizations or persons who are planning an event in the Town of Cornelius obtain a permit from the Police Department. The application must be filed not less than two (2) weeks before the date on which the event is to take place. There is no charge to apply or for the permit itself, if approved. If you are planning an event in the Town of Cornelius, you can come to the Cornelius Police Department Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. to apply for or obtain copies of a Special Events Permit. You can contact the Police Department during these hours at (704) 892-1363.
To be issued a permit, you must supply as much information as possible. Things to consider include:
- ABC Permits: Mecklenburg County Alcohol Beverage Control Board requires permits for service of any alcoholic beverage. You can contact them at (704) 376-7444.
- Building Permits: Mecklenburg County Building Standards require permits for any temporary or permanent structures, electrical wiring, tents, cooking facilities, etc. You can contact them at (704) 336-4180
- Emergency Medical Services: A description of the first aid or emergency medical staffing needs to be included. Provision of emergency medical services may be either at the event or on an “on-call” basis. You can contact Cornelius Fire & Rescue for arrangements at (704) 892-1544.
- Fire Marshal Permits: Mecklenburg County Fire Marshall’s Office requires permits for any parade floats, open flames, fireworks or pyrotechnics, vehicle fuel, cooking facilities, tents, air supported structures, canopies, or other fabric shelters. You can contact them at (704) 336-2154.

- Noise: Clearly describe any noise, music, or sound amplification devices that will be at the event including the specific hours.
- Sanitation: You will need to explain your plan of action to promote and maintain a sanitary environment. Include number and location of trash containers to be provided for the event. Indicate who will be responsible for making sure the event location is cleaned after the event. Describe the number, type, and location of portable toilets to be provided for the event (or permanent toilets to be used for the event). This should include identifying any permits you have obtained through the Mecklenburg County Health Department, if required.
- Other Safety Procedures: Other safety services can be obtained through the North Mecklenburg Rescue Squad at (704) 875-1457.
- Off-Duty Police Services: Depending on the complexity of your event, the Cornelius Police Department may require the use of off-duty police officers or other trained personnel for a Special Event such as a security firm. All costs associated with this requirement, if applied, is the responsibility of the event sponsor. The rate of pay for off-duty police officers is set annually at a rate commensurate with surrounding agencies. Any event sponsor has the option of providing their own security staff if required.
