A: Yes, we do. He covers the Town of Cornelius Monday - Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. |
Q: What does it take to become and Investigator for the Cornelius Police Department?
A: Investigator’s are selected and re-assigned from the the Patrol Division. Once an opening in the Investigative Division is established, the Chief of Police will notify all personnel of the vacancy. Anyone interested in pursuing a re-assignment would be asked to notify the Chief of Police by a set date and time. The Chief will determine the best candidate for the job after reviewing the officer’s performance records along with his/her training records. |
Q: What is the noise policy for Cornelius? When is it a problem?
A:
The Towns "Noise Ordinance" covers a wide range of different sound reproducing devices that could be perceived as excessively disturbing and unreasonable. Some of the area's covered by the ordinance are mechanical devices, animals, any sound amplification device such as radios or public address systems, discharging of firearms or other exploding devices. Upon receiving a noise complaint the police department sends an officer to evaluate the cause of the disturbance. After determining whether or not a violation is occurring, the officer will take action to correct the problem. This may include a written warning or town citation for the offence. |

A: Yes, this is a service that we provide free of charge. |

A: Yes, this service is free to Cornelius citizens and there is a ten dollar service charge for persons who live outside of the Town of Cornelius. |

A: Yes we have shore patrol boat used during special events and during the spring and summer boating season. |

A: It is against town regulations to discharge any weapon that impels with force, any bullet shot or pellet within the corporate limits of Cornelius. |

A: It is unlawful for anyone to discharge fireworks or pyrotechnics within the corporate limits of Cornelius unless you have obtained a permit from the county and supplied a copy to the Town Clerk. |

Q: If I turn someone's lost property into the police department, like money or something else of value, what becomes of it if the rightful owner is never located?
A: The police department will try to contact the owner of the property and will hold it for at least 90 days. After that period of time passes, generally, the person turning in the property can claim it back. |

A: Yes if you are going out of town we offer the service of checking on your residence while your gone, we just have to obtain some general information before you leave, this can be done by phone, on our web site (under security check) or by stopping by the police department and filling out the form. |

A: No if you are a resident of Cornelius you do not need to register your alarm with us, everything is handled through the alarm company. |
Q: What area does your communications center serve?
A: We currently serve the Towns of Cornelius, Huntersville, and Davidson College with police calls. We also dispatch animal control calls for Cornelius. |
Q: What services does the communication center provide
A: We receive and process calls for service using telephones, two-way radios and other equipment. We also assist citizens with other needs such as locating phone numbers and various other tasks when possible. |
Q: When is it appropriate to dial 911?
A: We strongly encourage our citizens and visitors to dial 911 at any time they need assistance or have a question. |
Q: What will happen when I dial 911?
A: A telecommunicator will confirm your address, phone number and name. They will then ask questions concerning your situation and send the assistance you need. We also send police officers on all 911 hang ups, if you dial by mistake stay on the line. |
Q: How many employees work at the Communication Center?
A: We currently have 11 full time telecommunicators, 4 part-time telecommunicators and 1 citizen volunteer. Experience levels range from 1 year to 15 years of experience. |
Q: Can I become a telecommunicator?
A: Yes we are currently accepting applications for part-time telecommunicators. We also have a citizen volunteer program for those who may be interested. |
Q: Can I visit or observe the telecommunicators while they work?
A: Yes, we are available to the public twenty-four hours a day. We ask that you make arrangements prior to visiting if it will be for an extended period of time. |
